The Roman Ranks
Before Rome had Senators as leaders they had kings, but when started to have to many kings at once they changed it to senators. There were also many other citizens and leaders in different ranks. The common Roman citizens were patricians, plebeians and slaves. The leaders were dictators, senators and consuls. Only rich Romans could become magistrates, a group of men that governed Rome. The citizens of Rome, patricians and plebeians elected their leader, so it was very important that the magistrates did a good job in governing the city or else the citizens would no re-elect them again next year.
