Dress up like the Romans
The people of Pompeii had a lot of different clothing and quite a few of them are still used today. Roman clothes were made of wool, spun
into cloth by the women of the family. Later on the richer people had slaves to
do this work for them. If you could afford to buy clothes, you could buy linen,
cotton or silk, which was brought to Rome from other parts of the Empire.
Washing clothes was difficult because the Romans did not have washing machines
or soap powder. They used either a chemical called sulphur or urine.
What did the men wear
Some of the the clothes that the men wore were Togas, which was a type of clothing that was made wool and was very large. The piece of clothing was draped around the body and over one arm and had different colors for different occasions. Normal citizens wore a white Toga, magistrates and upper class boys wore a white Toga that had a purple border on it, a black Toga was worn after someone had died, a bleached Toga was worn by politicians and a purple toga with gold embroidery was worn by a victorious general and later by emperors. Tunics were another piece of clothing that was used and could worn by any type of citizen (eg. Rich, Middle Class and Poor). It could be worn plain, belted at the waist and would usually be worn underneath their toga. Tunics were made out of a lot of different materials depending on how much money you have, so don't spend to much! All Romans were only aloud to have one hairstyle which was to either to have their hair cut short or shaved. After the time of Hadrian some men began growing beards. There was also many other types of clothing that they used such as underwear, shoes and jewelry, just to name a few.
What did the women wear
Women had a few types of clothing that were the same as the men's. Most of the time, women wore Tunics. Women wore two different types of tunics, a under Tunic and outer Tunic. Over or under the inner tunic she often had a belt or sash to support the breasts and the Tunics were usually short sleeved. One of the other things they used was a Palla. A Palla was a large oblong shawl, usually woolen, and worn outdoors. Often the way to put it on was one end was thrown over the left shoulder from behind, falling straight in front, and the rest was drawn around the back and brought forward over or under the right arm. The end was then carried across the breast and thrown back over the left shoulder, or it hung from the left arm. This wrap could also be drawn over the head, although scarves or veils were sometimes worn. Women were allowed any hairstyle they wanted and varied in many different types. Women were also aloud to dye their hair to a golden-red color to imitate the color of a Greek woman's hair. There also wore scarfs, belts, shoes or sandals, wreaths and jewelry
As you can see men and women wore a lot of different clothes that are still quite popular now.
